Now that the warm weather will be with us for at least the next five or six months or so, it’s time to take a look at all the ice cream shops around the NJroute22.com coverage area.
Our first look is at Thee Ice Cream Parlor over on Route 202 in Flemington, NJ. A 10-15 minute jaunt off of Route 22, but still within the scope of this fantastic website!
[Note that this author doesn’t purposely eat sugar or carbs – however, everyone else in our family does. But we will chime in on the alternatives as well!]
Thee Ice Cream Parlor is a throwback!
You can tell from just the look of the place, that Thee Ice Cream Parlor is a throwback to the 50’s. Large tile flooring, vinyl seating, Formica tables, and more. Any more genuine, and the cast of Grease will be on hand!
From their snippet below, they’ve been in business for 14 years, but I recall this specific location just opening up in the last couple years. Sorry if we can’t recall where they were previously. (Will update if we find out… sorry!)
Step back in time to the 50’s with our twist on an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. With over 80 flavors of homemade hand dipped ice cream and soft serve, there is something for everyone! Family owned and operated, our extensive menu of homemade ice creams, frozen yogurt, specialty sundaes, and so much more, has been Hunterdon County’s best kept secret for over 14 years now.
Everyone in our family enjoyed the hand-made ice cream. Although they miffed on our order a bit (nothing to blame on anyone, as we were disjointed in our communications ability), the recipients still gobbled it all up. All in all, better than mass-produced assembly-line ice cream, I guess!
Not just ice cream, but other devilish treats as well
Besides just hand-made scoops, soft-serve, and Italian Ices, they also do sundaes and milkshakes. Don’t forget the Belgian Waffles for those who are ready to go “all in” on their decadence.
Low carb, low sugar options too!
However, they offer a very cool low-carb option for those who want to share the experience with their friends and family, but don’t want to feel left out. They also offer Only8 Frozen Yogurt as well.
It’s labeled as “America’s Healthiest Frozen Yogurt,” and apparently boasts these qualifications:
No fat, added calcium, low carbs, no preservatives, only fructose, “safe” for diabetics,” active yogurt cultures, and so on.
We tried it – and found it pretty good. We felt like we could participate in the ice cream deluge. We had the small “twist” version (mix of chocolate and vanilla). One of the two flavors had an odd taste to it – not sure which. Next time we’ll sample each flavor independently to isolate the questionable source. But for 40 or 50 calories and only 7 grams of carbs, it was a delight for those who choose not to eat ordinary sugar-laden products, but still, want to feel like part of the gang.
Here’s their full menu:
Anyway – here’s where you can find them! Open every day except Monday (all days until 9pm, and 8pm on Sundays)!
