HomeSense of Watchung, NJ
We checked out HomeSense – a new “home” store over on Route 22 East in Watchung, NJ.
It’s basically another one of the TJX family of stores (like Marshall’s, HomeGoods, TJMaxx, etc.) One of the strongest retail group of stores in the world (in the Top 100 on the Fortune 500).
They all sell many overlapping products. This brand seems to focus more on furniture than the rest of them.
Homesense has over 230 worldwide locations, with just over 20 locations in the U.S. (most are in Canada and Europe). Including Watchung, there are a total of eight (8) in New Jersey.
HomeSense – the verdict is still out
We don’t have enough experience with HomeSense yet to formalize a definitive stance. Maybe when we’re in the market for more “furnishings” in the future, perhaps.
Personally, we are typically more interested in practical things. You know, items that have a purpose other than superficial. Which is why we enjoy poking around in their kitchen sections for pots, pans, and utensils. Nothing profound caught our attention during our recent visit.
They did have tons of decorations and other superficial items, but in general, decorating is not really our ball of wax.
But we can see this place being a good alternative to the IKEA shoppers out there. Especially if moving into a new home or apartment.
Plus, they do have quite a bit of “seasonal” stuff people might want to buy to make their home more festive – especially around the Christmas holiday.
HomeSense, along with all the other similar stores are the kinds of spots you want to check in periodically, as their inventory constantly changes. Many of their purchases are off-price and special buys, so timing is key. “Here today, gone tomorrow.”
One good thing about HomeSense and their siblings – is they frequently have items on “clearance.” So spending more than a few minutes there might help you discover some gems.
But overall – we’re not entirely ecstatic about this store, because there is nothing truly groundbreaking about it. Just another spot to browse around.
